hq summer hols 2016
Apr. 15th, 2016 09:16 amDear hqhols author,
First of all, thank you so much for participating! Rest assured that I'll love your fic no matter what you write, so please don't feel pressured :) I've written some prompts, and a list of tropes/narrative devices I enjoy, but by no means do you have to include all or any of them - if you have a particular idea you're burning to write, go for it. The most important thing is that you have fun!

Hana is one of my favourite characters, and I adore the quiet triumph of her character arc, so absolutely anything Hana-centric would be amazing! Her disillusionment with Johzenji's play style and the unarticulated distance that grows between her and the team from that is really interesting, given that we see very little of managers who aren't well-integrated into their team's dynamic. But despite her disappointment and despite the departure of the other third years, Hana chooses to stay. Why is a question you might like to explore – because she still loves the sport? Because she wants to win as much as her team does, and she isn't willing to give up on her ambitions? Because she believes she has a duty towards her team? Regardless of the reason, it's a conscious decision and a continuous effort on her part, since Hana doesn't feel like she has the power to affect how the team works, but of course she does manage to impart her three-years-worth of managerial understanding to the team in the end.
I would love a fic at any point along her character progression, whether you choose to set it in her hopeful first year, the zenith of her bitterness and resignation, the uncertain aftermath as she works towards her future, or her university life on the other end of her arc!
Here are some potential character dynamics featuring Hana that I really love – feel free to include as few or as many as you want, gen or shippy. If you want to write your favourite character interacting with Hana, I strongly encourage you to do so – I'm all for unconventional character matchups! I'd just ask that you didn't include romantic and reciprocated Hana/Terushima, thank you!
The Seijou Four hold a very special place in my heart! I love their familiarity and friendship, and the deep trust they have in one another. I also love the teasing banter and the ridiculous antics! Anything that juxtaposes these two features would be wonderful – the everyday mundanities of their school life! Failed rival team intel gathering missions! Post-school roadtrip! Super cliche arcade dates! Any of the AU ideas above! Post-Spring High angst is also fine, so long as they make some sort of attempt at levity, successful or not.
Feel free to make it as gen or as shippy as you want – I ship pretty much every combination possible, and ot4 fic is more than welcome. If you do choose to go the shippy route, though, please focus on the bonds between all four of them, rather than an Iwaizumi/Oikawa and Matsukawa/Hanamaki double date kind of deal (incidentally, Hanamaki/Oikawa is my favourite intragroup dynamic). Completely optional, but if you wanted to throw Yudacchi in there too, please do so!
Moniwa is my dearest gently harried captain! I love that he represents a different, realer side to high school volleyball amidst the prodigies and terrifyingly dedicated shounen sports heroes – he applies himself earnestly, he's a decent setter without any particular exceptional ability, he diligently supports his team despite worrying he isn't good enough to lead them. Despite his apparent ordinariness, his passion and effort is no less deeply felt than anyone else's, and honestly I find it even more affecting because he knows that he isn't good enough to even settle for 'good enough'.There's something about him that's always underscored with a faint sense of self-doubt and the belief that he doesn't deserve to expect anything (patently false, Moniwa deserves the world), but also a deep fondness for his team.
Dynamics-wise, I like any variation of the captain squad, the Datekou third years, the entire Datekou team, and especially Futakuchi's hilariously tragic one-sided crush/hero worship/imposter syndrome thing re Moniwa. I'd prefer if the fic were set sometime during Moniwa's Datekou years (not post-canon), but I would be overjoyed to receive any sort of fic featuring him – Datekou team antics, post-Interhigh third year angst, Moniwa as a first year, Moniwa taking on the team captaincy, anything goes!
Michimiya Yui/Aihara Mao:

General likes:
- unusual or experimental prose styles
- worldbuilding
- histories (whether canonical or not), and a strong sense of setting
- inclusion of minor characters/ensemble casts
- mentor-mentee dynamics
- the presence of female characters
- ideological clashes
- the exploration of unorthodox relationships between characters, especially if they are not shown interacting much in canon
- relationship dynamics that are difficult to define, especially if non-romantic
- allusions to mythology
- physicality and nonverbal communication
- polyamory negotiations
- the transition from teenager to adult/the process of growing up (relatedly, transitions and liminal spaces in general)
- legacies
Things I have no preference on:
- content rating implied and background pairings, unless specifically mentioned (you can find a complete list of my haikyuu ships here!)
- multishipping
- genre plot/lack thereof and endings
General dislikes:
- pwp
- excessive fluff or angst
- graphically described eye horror
- excising other influential relationships the characters in the main ship have experienced
- noncon, A/B/O, watersports, and other heavy kinks
- kids, pregnancy or marriage as the main focus of the fic
- bullying played for laughs
- soulmate aus played straight (ie all soulmates are romantic, everyone has One True Soulmate, all the biologically imperative stuff, the implication that you need a romantic 'other half' to be complete, etc)
- over-westernisation (eg the characters going to prom, westernised nicknames/non-canon shortened names) describing characters as a 'mum' or as 'trash'
Tropes/AUs I love:
- magical realism/mundane superpower au
- pacific rim au (especially with unconventional jaeger teams!)
- fake dating
- HDM daemon au
- canon divergences enemies to friends (to lovers optional)
- while still retaining some form of legitimate rivalry/resentment
- espionage au
- post-apocalypse roadtrip au
- domesticity and slice-of-life
Some more specific prompts below:
1. Misaki Hana

2. Oikawa Tooru, Iwaizumi Hajime, Matsukawa Issei, Hanamaki Takahiro
3. Moniwa Kaname
4. Michimiya Yui/various
Michimiya Yui/Aihara Mao:
These two seem like steadfast friends on and off the court – if I remember correctly, Mao is Yui's vice-captain, so I'd love to see more of that dynamic! Anything including lighthearted ribbing underscored with mutual respect and support would be great! We know Yui wanted her team to work harder but could never spur them on to do so; how did Mao feel about the situation? Was there ever any tension between them because of differing approaches to volleyball/wanting different things out of it? Will they continue to play volleyball at university? Please also feel free to take the opportunity to flesh out the Karasuno Girls' VBC if you want to!
Michimiya Yui/Misaki Hana:
The Hana/Yui section of this post pretty much covers everything I want out of this ship, but in summary: further exploration of the captain/manager dynamic in terms of their complementary abilities to analyse the team's performance, gentle acknowledgement that both girls persevered with volleyball despite disappointment and perceived inadequacy, and some sort of catharsis or second chance for both of them! Specifically for these two, please keep things optimistic overall – I'd love to see them grapple with these issues, but please have them be resolved by the end of the fic.
Michimiya Yui/Sawamura Daichi:
MY DARLING CAPTAIN SHIP I love how supportive they are of each other and the sheer amount of fondness between them! They obviously have a lot of familiarity with each other, given their history together, and I'd love to see more of that! Study dates, festival dates, practice matches, quiet and casual moments of intimacy in between the tournaments and intraclub drama and the pressure of captaincy. I'd particularly love something slice-of-life for these two and how they navigate leading their very different teams!
Again, all of this is just intended as a guideline! Thank you for participating, and see you on the other side!
